Chapter 6: Emergency

Scott drove with one hand on the wheel and the other white-knuckled on the gearshift.

Neither of us said a word.

My blouse was buttoned wrong.

I had my underwear in my bag, and I could still feel him between my legs when the car hit a bump.

The emergency room at St. Luke's was loud and bright and smelled like floor cleaner.

We came through the sliding doors at a half run.

Delilah stood in the middle of the waiting room in a white coat and bare feet, with her heels in one hand and her phone in the other.

Her mascara had run.

For one second I almost felt sorry for her.

Then she saw me, and her face closed.

"You," she said.

"Where is he?" Scott asked.

"Behind the curtain, they're drawing blood. His nose bled for forty minutes, Scott, forty minutes, I thought..." She cut herself off. She looked from his rumpled shirt to my buttons. "Oh, that's disgusting."

"Delilah."

"You brought her. You brought her to my son's hospital with her blouse buttoned wrong."

Heads turned all over the waiting room.

A man with a bandaged hand stopped pretending to read a magazine.

"Keep your voice down," Scott said.

"Why? Because people will find out what you do at night?" Delilah pointed at me. Her hand shook. "She is a cleaner. She is nobody. She stood in my house on Monday and looked at my son like she owned him."

"I want to see him," I said.
