Chapter 11: Fifteen Dollars
Dalton had asked me to meet him on the roof of the Cudahy building, and when I got there, his grandmother was sitting on a bench by the railing with a thermos.
"Don't mind me," Opal said. "I like the view."
It was eight o'clock, and the wind was bitter.
Dalton stood at the far end of the roof with his hands jammed in his coat.
He looked like he hadn't slept in a week.
"You were right about Lucinda," he said, before I reached him. "I'm going to deal with it."
"After," I said. "First the ring."
I held up my right hand.
The stone caught the light from the city, and threw a small cold spark onto the gravel.
Dalton looked at it, and I watched the color leave his face.
"Who told you?" he said.
"Someone who knows stones." My voice shook. "He says you lied to me."
"I did," Dalton said.
He didn't look away.
"Tell me," I said.
"It was a little over two years ago. We were six months in. You'd just told me you didn't want anything from me, that you'd rather split the check than owe me." He rubbed his face. "I wanted to give you something. Anything. And I knew you'd say no to everything I could afford."
"So you lied."
"I found an estate jeweler. I bought the stone cash, and had a band made so plain no one would look twice. Then I put it in a paper bag from the street fair." He took a breath. "I told you it was fifteen dollars."
"Sixty-one thousand."
"Yes."
"And you took my quarters."
