Chapter 8: Ask Her for the Receipts
I followed Dalton out of the lobby into the cold.
It was ten degrees colder than when we'd arrived, and the wind came straight off the lake.
"You want me to accuse her," he said, walking fast with his collar up. "On the strength of a necklace."
"I want you to ask her for a receipt."
"She carried my father's coffin, Susie. She sat with me for three days after. She was the one who called the funeral home when I couldn't pick up the phone."
"I know."
"Do you?"
"I know she loves you," I said. "I also know the date on the first line of that list."
"Dates get sorted wrong."
"Then ask her to show you."
He stopped on the sidewalk under a streetlight, and a bus hissed past us.
"If I ask her for receipts, I'm telling her I think she's a thief."
"Yes."
"After six years."
"Yes."
"And if I'm wrong?"
"Then you'll have asked a friend a question." I stepped closer. "You've spent three years not asking anyone anything, Dalton. It's your whole personality."
That landed.
I watched it land.
His jaw tightened, and he looked away down the street.
"That's not fair," he said.
"It's not meant to be fair. It's meant to be true."
"You think I don't know what she is to me? She's the only person who stayed after my dad. My mother left when I was seven. Gran is Gran. Lucinda stayed."
"I'm not asking you to hate her."
"You're asking me to doubt her."
"I'm asking you to look," I said. "That's all."
He turned back, and his eyes were furious and wet.
"You're asking me to take your word over hers."
I went still.
"Say that again," I said.
