Chapter 18: What He Took

Ronan's POV

I waited until she was asleep to leave.

It was a quarter past midnight.

She lay on her stomach with one bandaged hand under the pillow, and the crescent on her wrist glowed faintly against the sheet.

I had promised her I wouldn't go out alone again.

So I did not go alone.

Nash was waiting in the yard with two flashlights and a coil of rope.

Beside him, in a borrowed Ashfang coat, stood the big hunter with the burned hand.

He looked ten years older than he had in the Moonstone yard.

"You're sure about this," I said to him.

"No," he said. "But I'd like to die of something that isn't what I did."

"Show me the blinds."

He led us up the ridge road in the dark.

There were eight, built into the spruce on the north side.

Each one was a platform of lashed boards ten feet up a trunk, with a rifle wedged in a bracket and aimed at the stone yard below.

The hunter walked from tree to tree and named them.

"That one's the old Alpha's rifle. Warrick had the scope redone. Those three are loaded with silver. The rest are for show."

"For show?"

"He wanted the pack to see rifles in the trees and think their Alpha was dangerous." His mouth twisted. "He never trusted all eight of us to shoot straight."

"Which three are silver?"

He pointed.

Nash went up the first trunk without a word, and I took the second.

The boards were wet.

I pulled the rifle out of its bracket and worked the bolt, and a silver-tipped round fell into my palm.

It burned my skin where it touched. I dropped it in the sack and hissed.
