Chapter 22: Take Her and Go

Roxanne's POV

Vera walked into the ring with the whole yard watching her.

She stopped ten feet from me and didn't come any closer.

She had a folded envelope in her hand, soft from being carried.

"Madam envoy," she said. "I'd like to speak before he does."

"You are not an Alpha or an elder," the envoy said. "You have no standing."

"I have the tea."

The envoy looked at her for a moment.

"Go on," she said.

Vera turned to face the pack.

Her voice shook on the first sentence and then steadied.

"I brewed it for Roxanne every morning for three years. Wolfsbane and moon-fern."

She looked around the ring.

"You all heard that already. The healer said so in the hall."

Nobody answered.

"What you don't know is who told me to."

Warrick had pushed himself up onto one elbow, with his broken wrist held against his chest.

"She's lying," he said. "She's a jealous woman who got herself pregnant and wants someone to blame."

"Then explain this."

Vera opened the envelope and took out a stack of small white cards.

They were plain recipe cards, the kind sold in a pack at the grocery store.

Each one had a date at the top and a list of herbs in the middle.

"He wrote one for every month," Vera said. "Every month, the new amounts."

"Why?" the envoy asked.

"He wanted her wolf kept down but not killed."

She held the top card up to the lamplight.

"Look at the handwriting. You've all had a note from him. You all know it."

The old woman with the cane came forward and took the card from her hand.

She held it at arm's length and read it.

"It's his," she said. "That's the Dunmoor hand. Bold blue ink. I taught the father's letters."
