Chapter 18: The Bonfire

The bonfire was stacked twelve feet high on the practice field, and two thousand students stood in a ring around it.

Orange light moved over their faces, and somebody's speaker played something with a heavy drum.

I stood on the near side of the fire with my hands in my hoodie pockets.

Brock stood next to me in his gray sweatshirt, taller than me by three inches and shrinking every minute.

Kendra stood a few feet off with the redhead, both of them in plain coats, both of them silent.

"They're here," Brock said quietly.

I had heard the bus pull in a minute earlier.

The lineman came through the crowd first, with his bad arm out of the brace.

The skinny kid walked behind him, holding his phone high.

The two from the probation list walked behind them, and they all had the same grin.

Students backed out of their way without being asked.

"Gilligan!" the lineman yelled. "Hey, Billionaire!"
