We opened the second letter that night on the penthouse floor, on a couch long enough for four people.

Adrienne sat cross-legged beside me in my dress shirt.

The lights of Columbus covered the whole window.

I broke the gray wax with my thumb.

"Wesley. If you are reading this, Gordon is gone, and I was right about him.

"I was too slow to act on it. Forgive an old man his cowardice.

"The ring does not give you anything you were not born with.

"It wakes what is already in the Lowry blood, a little at a time. You will find out which parts are yours.

"The young woman who reads contracts for fun is Gordon's daughter, and she is nothing like him.

"I tried to hire her away from him three times. Try again.

"Eat when you are tired. And when it is over, go back to the fountain.

"Not to prove anything. Stand in it until it is only a fountain. J.L."

I put the page down on my knee.
