Chapter 18: Her Handwriting

I sat down on the carpet with the certificate in both hands and my skirt still rucked around my hips.

Bram sat on the floor across from me with his back against the leather chair.

Neither of us said anything for a while.

Outside the door, someone dropped a stack of paper and swore softly.

"That's my handwriting," I said.

"Yes."

"I wrote it in a chapel with plastic roses and a pen on a chain."

"You made the minister hold your hand still so the pen wouldn't bounce."

"I was twenty-two. I thought a marriage was a thing you could promise not to quit."

"So did I."

I turned the paper to the front and the back and the front again.

"You kept it in a drawer."

"I kept it where I'd see it every day I signed something large."

His mouth twisted.

"I told myself it was a reminder of what I was working for. Mostly it was a way to look at your handwriting."

I put the certificate down on the carpet between us.

"Here's the thing I haven't said to you," I said.

"Say it."

"I told you to see to the paperwork, and I never saw to it either."

"Etta."

"Let me finish."

He closed his mouth.

"For seven years I said you were the one who left, and you were. That part's true."

"But I could have filed any Tuesday of those years, and I didn't."
