Chapter 32: Queen Moves On
Inside the box, on a bed of white tissue, lay two pieces of silver and tortoiseshell joined by a fine bright seam.
It was my veil comb.
A jeweler had mended it so skillfully that I had to hold it to the window to find the break.
"I swept up the pieces myself, after your guests left," said the old officiant. "I could not bring myself to throw out a thing that had been so well used."
"I took them to a man on Westminster Street. He said he had never seen so honest a break."
I pressed my hand to my mouth.
"I have married two hundred couples in that church," he said, "and I have never been so proud of a bride as I was of you that day."
"Do not tell my bishop."
He bowed and would not stay, though Pearl chased him halfway down the block with a plate of cake.
Bram took the comb from my hand and slid it into my curls above my left ear.
It held.
"There," he said. "Now it's a wedding."
We ate lunch in the street at a table made of four doors on sawhorses.
The baker brought seventeen loaves.
The tailor's wife stood on a chair and gave a toast that rhymed and lasted ten minutes.
At dusk the guests carried the shop's pianos back through the door, and somebody hung paper lanterns from Gloria's lid, and the floor was cleared.
Pearl sat down at the Bechstein and cracked her knuckles.
"Last request," she said. "Dad's waltz. Wrong."
"All of it?" I asked.
"The whole third bar. I'll do it myself. I've heard it enough."
She played it with her sequins glittering in the lantern light, a little crooked and perfectly happy.
