Chapter 10: Night Shift
I went back to work on Monday night, because forty patients were waiting and nobody else was going to take them.
"You're insane," Carter said in the garage.
"I've been called that three times this week."
"There's two million dollars on your head."
"Then I'll be the safest nurse in the building."
He looked at me with a face like a locked vault.
"Fine," he said. "I'm coming in."
He walked through the staff entrance behind me in a black coat and a visitor sticker.
Every nurse on the floor stopped what she was doing.
"Calla," breathed the triage nurse. "Who is that?"
"A friend of my brother's. He's waiting for me."
"Is he single?"
"He's sitting in the corner."
"I'm sitting in the corner," Carter said, and sat in a plastic chair under the TV with a bad magazine.
He stayed there for six hours and read about knee replacements.
At two in the morning the department finally went quiet.
I was restocking the supply closet when the door opened and shut, and the lock turned.
"You can't be in here," I said without turning around.
"There's a sign that says staff only."
"There are two signs."
"I read the small one."
I turned.
He stood against the door with his arms folded and his eyes burning.
"Everyone on this floor stared at me for six hours," he said. "You've been bending over a gurney in those scrubs. I'm not made of stone."
"You told me you had control."
"I lied."
I laughed, and then I stopped laughing, because he crossed the closet in two steps, lifted me against the shelves, and kissed me until I forgot the supply list.
