Chapter 16: Her Choice
I walked through the steel gate of Reed Terminal on my own two feet, in daylight, with my brother's phone in my fist.
Nobody opened it for me.
It stood wide, because the burned truck had taken the lock, and the crew in the yard went quiet as I crossed.
Forty men in work jackets watched me walk, and not one of them looked at the ground this time.
Carter followed a step behind me.
He didn't touch me, and he didn't speak.
I wanted it that way.
The second was in a shipping container at the back of the yard, with a cot, a bucket, and a lamp on a cable.
The guard on the crutch stood outside it.
When he saw me, he straightened.
"Ma'am."
"Open it, please."
"He's been quiet, ma'am."
"He asked for tea."
"Then he can ask me for it."
The door scraped back.
The second sat on the cot with his back to the steel wall.
He had been shaved by someone, badly, and his beard was a stubble of grey.
