Chapter 18: The Nephew
I pulled on jeans and Carter's grey shirt, and we went down the iron stairs together with his hand on the small of my back.
Dawn was a thin yellow line over the river.
The first dock crews were coming through the gate for the six o'clock shift.
A line of trucks idled in the street outside with their lights on.
Tori stood in the courtyard with two coffees and her hair in a knot.
She had slept in the east room under three guards.
"What's with the horn?" she said.
"Giorgio sent something."
The thin nephew stood just outside the gate beside a black sedan.
He wore a good overcoat and carried a shoebox under one arm.
Two of his men stayed in the car with the engine running.
He smiled when he saw me.
It was the smile of a man who has already spent the money.
"Miss Swire."
"Mr. Reed."
"You look well rested."
"State your business," Carter said.
"You're on my pavement."
"It's neutral ground."
"I'm allowed."
"Then be quick."
