Chapter 8: Morning
Carter Reed burned the eggs.
I stood in the kitchen doorway at seven the next morning in his grey shirt and watched the most feared man in Philadelphia scrape a black pan with a spatula.
"Don't," he said without turning.
"I haven't said anything."
"You're laughing with your whole face."
"You own a shipping terminal. You can't make eggs?"
"I have a man for that."
"Where's your man?"
"Asleep. It's seven in the morning, and nobody was shot at last night."
"Somebody was shot at Monday and Thursday."
"Then I'll take the calm."
I crossed the room and wrapped my arms around him from behind.
His back went still.
Then he put the spatula down and covered my hands with his.
"I keep waiting for you to wake up and regret it," he said.
"Do I look like I regret it?"
He turned in my arms and studied me.
His eyes moved across my face, the bruises fading yellow on my throat, the stitches on my palm.
"No," he said.
"Good."
"But you will, if you learn everything."
"Then tell me everything."
"Not today."
"Why not?"
"Because today you're here, in my kitchen, in my shirt, and I want one day of that."
My heart did something painful.
I rose on my toes and kissed him, slowly.
He tasted like coffee and smoke.
"One day," I said against his mouth. "I'll give you one day."
His hands slid to my hips and lifted me onto the counter beside the ruined eggs.
"Carter. Tori's upstairs."
"She's asleep."
"What about the guard in the hall?"
"I'm going to lock the door."
He did, with one hand, and came back.
