Chapter 13: Fine
"Don't," I said.
Geoffrey stopped with one hand on the door frame.
"Not one word that starts with 'I was going to.'"
"All right."
"Did you know?" I asked. "When you saw me in row two. Did you know who I was?"
He looked at the floor, and then he made himself look up.
"Yes," he said.
It was one word, and it hit me harder than the whole recording had.
I sat down on the bed because my legs had stopped working.
He didn't come in.
He stayed in the hall with his coat dripping on the boards, and he talked to me.
"A year ago I sat at my grandmother's table and watched Brandon leave a girl crying in the kitchen," he said. "He'd ended it by text, in the middle of dessert."
"So you told him he couldn't keep one a year."
"I wanted him to be ashamed of something for once. I never thought the bet would land on a person."
"He showed you my picture."
"He showed me a girl at a scanner with a pencil in her hair," Geoffrey said. "I thought she'd be gone in a month, like all of them. I never gave it another thought."
"Until when?"
"September. Grandma said Brandon was still bringing the library girl to Sunday dinner. She said it had been eleven months."
I heard myself laugh, and it was an ugly sound.
"You counted."
"I counted. I called Brandon that night. He admitted it, and he laughed. I told him to end it and he said no. I told him again two days later and he said no again."
"And you didn't call me."
"I didn't have your number. I had your name and a photograph he'd taken without you knowing."
