Chapter 25: Party Night
My mother read the post over my shoulder and went white around the mouth.
"Bring her," she said. "Bring her where?"
"To the party, Mom."
"Like a pizza," Corey said quietly.
The comments were already coming.
"On my way."
"214, knock knock."
Crew stood up so fast his chair scraped.
"You're not going back there."
"I haven't slept there in two weeks," I said. "She doesn't know that."
The owner came over from the register with the phone off the wall and handed it to me.
"Call," she said.
I called campus police from the Night Owl's landline with my mother holding my other hand.
By midnight there was a patrol car parked outside Ashgrove Hall with its lights off.
My mother slept at the motel by the interstate with her phone on the pillow.
I lay awake at Crew's between the two of them, all three of us still in our clothes, and nobody slept.
Friday at nine p.m., I walked into Room 214 with a campus officer beside me.
Jordyn was downtown hanging balloons on a roof.
