Chapter 5: The Stairs
I stood up off her white bed.
The wine had dried sticky on my legs.
"I'd love to leave," I said. "Your bathroom's the wrong door, by the way."
Saylor didn't look at me.
She was looking at Corey.
At the burner in his hand.
"Give me that, babe."
"What is it, Say?"
"It's nothing. It's a spare."
"A spare for what?"
"For things that aren't your business." Her voice went sweeter. "Give it to me and we'll go downstairs and forget your stepsister went through my drawers like a raccoon."
Corey walked past her into the hall.
She grabbed his arm.
He kept walking, and she had to let go or be dragged.
He stopped at the top of the staircase.
Below us, forty girls in pastel went quiet one by one.
The music kept thumping into the silence.
"Corey," Saylor hissed behind him. "Not here."
"Here's good," he said.
He held up the phone.
"You paid that account to post on girls in this house."
A girl at the bottom of the stairs put her hand over her mouth.
"The Kappa girl. The girl from your lab, the one who left in March. You called her the fat one." He was reading off the screen now. "You bought audio of her crying in the shower."
"That's taken out of context," Saylor said.
"There's no context, Say. It says 'get audio.'"
"Every girl does it."
"Every girl in this house pays for it?"
Nobody downstairs moved.
A girl near the fireplace set her glass down very carefully.
"You sold Joni's room number to a stranger," Corey said. "Then you posted a prayer for her."
