Chapter 16: Not Yours
We stopped for gas at a two-pump station on the state road, because the needle was on empty and nobody had slept.
Misty went in to wash her lip.
I stood at the pump with my father's urn tucked in the crook of my arm.
Ronan held the nozzle and watched the road.
The black SUV came off the highway fast and crossed the lot in a long skid.
Bronco got out before it stopped.
He had a bandage taped over his eyebrow and his right forearm in a makeshift sling.
Two prospects came out behind him.
"Give me the phone," Bronco said.
"No," said Ronan.
"Last time, Shadow."
He did not even look at Ronan.
He looked at me, and he took three steps and caught a fistful of my braid.
My head snapped back.
The urn nearly left my arm.
"You made a fool of me twice," he said, close to my ear. "I'll make it right. I'll bring you in on your knees, and Cyrus will thank me for finding you."
I never saw Ronan move.
He had Bronco by the collar and the belt, and he threw him across the hood of a parked car.
Bronco hit it hard.
Ronan stood over him with the pump nozzle dripping gas on the concrete.
Both prospects stopped.
The clerk at the register picked up a phone.
"Take your hands off her," Ronan said.
His voice was perfectly flat.
"She is mine."
I heard it land.
For fourteen months a man had told me what I belonged to.
I stepped forward and pulled the nozzle out of his fist and hung it back on the pump.
"I'm not yours," I said. "I told you. I said it in the motel, and I meant it."
He turned.
His grey eyes were wild, and the whole station was watching.
