Chapter 17: Amanda's Tape
Amanda stood in my father's kitchen with rain in her hair and didn't look at anyone but me.
Her father had turned all the way around on his stool.
"I made this in my second year," she said. "In the car outside the club."
"I had just told my mother I wanted to tell you about the phone calls."
"I don't know why I turned it on. I think I wanted a witness."
"Play it," I said.
She set the phone in the middle of the table, between the pot and the salt, and pressed the screen.
A car engine idled, and a seat belt clicked.
Then Carolyn's voice came out of the speaker, soft and unhurried and perfectly pleasant.
"We don't tell Leo about the calls, darling."
"He's lonely, Mother. He doesn't know they're trying to reach him."
