Chapter 19: The Receivers
The newspaper hit the porch at 5:40, and Hammer carried it in.
SEVEN SISTERS BUILT ON ORPHAN MONEY.
It ran across the whole front page in black type.
Below it was a photo of the seven of us at the Gala, our faces half turned.
Underneath, in smaller letters, it said the Attorney General's office had opened a file on the St. Brigid's Alumni Fund "and its beneficiaries."
"It's not Mic's paper," Hammer said. "I checked."
"I'd have fired the editor," said Mic. "Twice."
The kitchen had gone quiet.
Doc stood at the stove in her scrubs, reading with her lips pressed white.
"The board meets at nine," she said. "They called it for me."
"I'm coming," I said.
"You said your rule was no help."
"The rule was for the company. This is family."
She looked at me for a long moment, then picked up her keys.
The Mercy Harbor boardroom had a long oak table and portraits of dead surgeons on the walls.
