Chapter 20: The Row Stands
They came up the hill to St. Brigid's on Saturday morning in twos and threes, and I stopped counting at thirty.
Some wore scrubs, and some wore work boots.
One wore a wedding dress, with a car idling at the curb for her own photographer.
All of them carried envelopes.
The old brick building stood at the top of the street, three stories of boarded windows with a county notice zip-tied to the fence.
Over the door the stone saint with the broken nose looked down on them, and I thought he looked relieved.
Hammer was waiting at the steps with a crowbar over her shoulder.
"It's still our building," she said, and put the bar behind the first board.
The plywood came off the front doors with a groan that I felt in my teeth.
Behind it, the doors were scarred oak, with a brass kick plate still bright where a thousand girls had pushed it open.
Forty-one women stood on the steps with their envelopes, shoulder to shoulder, and my sisters stood among them.
