Chapter 21: Regent

I looked down at the old woman on her knees in the snow.

Then I looked at the two hundred wolves of Ironbark behind her.

None of them were looking at Garrick.

"Get up," I said to the elder. "I don't take oaths from people on the ground."

She rose, stiffly.

"I'll take the regency," I said. "I'll hold the seat for my son until he is of age, and not one day after."

A sound went through the benches that was almost a sigh.

"I have terms."

"Name them," the elder said.

"First. The frost cell is never used on a living wolf again. Not for rogues, not for punishment, not for any law I have to read out loud."

"Done."

"Second. The law that the firstborn pup takes everything is struck from the book. Whoever leads Ironbark leads because the pack chooses them."

The elder's mouth opened.

"That is the oldest law we have."

"That is the law that put a woman in a cell in labour," I said. "It dies with the Beta."

Nobody argued.

"Third."

I turned.

Garrick stood alone at the front of the Ironbark benches, with his stitched cheek and his bandaged feet.

"Garrick Wycliffe holds the seat as keeper," I said. "As of this moment, he does not."

He didn't flinch.

"Your order put me on that floor," I said. "You said so in front of the judge, and you meant it. I believe that."

"Rhea."

"I don't forgive you. I told you that in Bram's kitchen, and I'm telling you in front of your pack."

His eyes were wet.

"Your rank is gone," I said. "Your seat, your house and your right to speak at the moot. You stay in the pack. You work at the north post under the gate captain, in the snow, with the rest of the watch."
