Chapter 23: Dinner

"Bram," I said. "Bram, look at his arm."

Bram was out of the bed and across the room before I'd finished.

We stood over the cradle in the lamplight, naked and half wrapped in a quilt, and stared at my son.

The dark fur was a thin line, no longer than an eyelash, running from his elbow to his wrist.

Ewan yawned, and the fur faded back into his skin.

"Is he ill?" I whispered.

"No," Bram said. His voice was strange. "That's a pull. It's the first shiver of the wolf. I didn't have mine until I was two."

"He's two weeks old."

"I know."

Down the hall, a door banged, and Sinead's voice called, "Is everything all right? Please say you're not murdering anyone, I've just washed my hair."

"Get Hester," I said.

Hester came at a shuffling run, in her nightgown and a coat, and put her rough healer's fingers on the baby's arm.

She looked at it for a long time.

"It's the Wycliffe line," she said at last. "The old Alphas pulled early. Edric's father was in fur at three weeks. It means nothing but a strong wolf."

"Can I stop it?"

"Why would you want to?"

"I don't want him in fur in the middle of the night," I said, "in a cradle that doesn't fit."

Hester's mouth moved, and for the first time in two weeks I saw her nearly smile.

"Feed him," she said. "He's hungry. It always starts with hunger."

I fed him.

The next evening Sinead put up the long table in the Greywater kitchen and announced that there would be a dinner.

It was not a feast.

It was a pot roast, a bowl of potatoes, bread still warm from the oven, and a jar of pickles Sinead said she'd been saving for a mate that Bram never got around to finding.

"You saved them for five years?" I said.
