Chapter 4: Greywater

The biggest wolf reached me first, a dark brown one with hazel eyes.

I stood in front of him with my hands open.

"I'm not armed," I said. "I'm not here for a fight."

He shifted on the ice, and then there was a man in front of me, bare to the waist in the cold, with a flannel shirt in one hand.

He looked at the blood on my coat.

He looked at my face.

He didn't ask who I was, and he didn't ask how I'd come to be there.

"Can you walk?" he said.

"No."

I fell, and he caught me.

I woke on a bed in a log room, under three quilts, with a fire cracking and the smell of bread somewhere close.

My ruined hands were wrapped in clean cloth.

Someone had cleaned the blood from my legs and put me in a flannel nightgown that was too big in the shoulders.

A woman sat at the end of the bed, peeling an apple with a short knife.

She was tall, freckled, with a choppy brown bob and a flour smear on her cheek.

"You're awake," she said. "Good. I was going to give it ten more minutes and then pour soup into you anyway."

"Where am I?"

"Greywater Lodge. I'm Sinead. My brother carried you in from the river, and he's been sitting outside that door for six hours, so don't make me tell him you woke up unless you want him in here."

"Your brother is the Alpha."

"He is. Bram. He'll deny being sentimental if you ask."

She held out a bowl.

I ate, because my hands were shaking and my body wanted it.

The soup was thick and salty, with barley in it.

I hadn't eaten since the moot.
