Chapter 13: What He Kept
The phone sat on the steel between us until its screen timed out and went dark.
Ansel got down off his stool, one hand on the counter and one on the walker.
"Settle it," he said. "Quietly."
He went up the stairs, tap, tap, tap, and a door closed over our heads.
"You promised him," I said.
"Hattie."
"You promised a man with a broken hip, and you let me hear the rest at four in the morning."
"He asked me not to say it."
"He asked you in November."
"Yes."
"I stood at your range for a week," I said. "You had every hour of it to tell me."
"I know. I kept waiting for a better hour."
Abel pressed the heels of his hands against his eyes.
"I thought if I told you, I'd break something that wasn't mine to break."
"It was mine," I said. "It's my grandmother."
"I know."
"You knew where she kept her love, Abel. You knew it for a month, and you let me walk around with half of her."
He took his hands down.
His gray eyes were red at the rims, and he did not look away from me, which made it worse.
