Chapter 24: Twelve
The pudding came up Main Street in Abel's arms.
He had wrapped it in the cloth it steamed in.
A Lutheran walked ahead of him, carrying a bowl of hard sauce with both hands.
Two hundred people watched it cross the snow, and nobody said a word.
He set it on the table in front of Ansel's recliner and unwrapped it.
It was dark and round and glossy as a chestnut, and a ribbon of steam rose into the candlelight.
Brandy and figs and winter filled the whole street.
Ansel looked at it a long time.
He picked up the knife himself.
His hand shook as it came out of his lap, and then, over the pudding, it stopped.
He cut the first slice and laid it on a plate.
He set the plate in front of the empty chair with the blue apron over its back.
He spooned the hard sauce on top, slowly, until it ran down the sides.
"There, Winnie," he said.
Nobody breathed.
Then he cut a second slice for himself, and took a bite.
