Chapter 13: The Speaking Stone
The Alder Creek meeting barn held every wolf in the estate district that night.
They stood three deep along the walls, and the smell of them filled my head, pine and sweat and wool.
Six days ago I couldn't have smelled any of it.
Five elders sat at a long table at the far end.
In front of the table, on the packed dirt floor, lay a flat grey stone as wide as a dinner plate.
Dalton had told me about it in the car.
Whoever stood on the speaking stone swore to tell the truth, and a lie told there cost the liar everything he held in the pack.
The old Alpha sat on a chair at the side of the room with his hands folded on a cane.
Gilbert stood behind him.
He didn't look at me, and I didn't look at him.
"This council is called on a claim of property," said the eldest elder, a small woman with white braids and a dry, hard voice. "The Alpha says the Brennan notebook belongs to Alder Creek by oath. Who speaks for the Brennans?"
"I do," I said.
"You are a Brennan?"
"I'm the last one."
A murmur ran along the walls.
"And you stand here without a pack," she said.
"She stands with mine," Dalton said.
He had been at my shoulder the whole way in, and now he stepped forward so the whole barn could see him.
"Dalton Reeve, Alpha of Highfall. I sponsor her petition before this council, as the law allows. Anything said against her is said against my pack."
The old Alpha smiled at his cane.
"Highfall is eleven wolves and a lodge," he said. "Sit down, boy."
Dalton didn't sit.
The eldest elder tapped the table once.
