Chapter 8: Her Sister at the Tree Line
Cecily stood at the edge of the pines with her gray cloak pulled tight and her hands twisted together.
Madoc had come down the path with me, and he waited back by a tree, where he could see us and not hear.
I had the feeling he heard anyway.
"Nerys," Cecily said.
Her nose was red, and her eyes were swollen.
"You shouldn't be here," I said.
"I know."
"Does Hadrian know you came?"
"No." She wiped her face with the heel of her hand. "I told Mama I was going to the stream. I had to see you. I had to say it to your face."
"Say what?"
"I'm sorry."
I waited for the rest of it.
"I never meant it to happen like this," she said. "He came to Ashmere last winter on the king's progress, and you were away, and the house was so quiet. Papa was at the border and Mama was ill in bed. Hadrian was kind."
"Kind."
"He talked to me. He asked what I thought of things."
That sounded true.
I remembered her at sixteen, crying at the gate, holding the hair ribbon I'd braided into her braid that morning.
Everything in our house had always been about me, the first one, the strong one, the one Papa bragged about at the table.
Nobody had ever asked what she thought about anything.
"You should have told me," I said. "You should have written."
"I wanted to. I was afraid you'd come home and hate me."
