Chapter 13: Four Minutes and Eleven Seconds

Tala's POV

Angelo came home at nine and did not take off his coat.

He stood in the kitchen doorway with his phone in his hand.

Dessa was at my stove cracking eggs, and she stopped with one in each fist.

"I have to ask you something," he said, "and I hate that I'm asking."

"Then ask."

"On the twenty-ninth of March, at twelve minutes past three in the afternoon, did you call Noelle?"

"No."

It came out before I had finished hearing the question.

He blinked.

"Just no?"

"Just no. I was in a plastic chair in an emergency room. Why?"

He turned the phone around and held it out.

It was a picture of a call log.

My name was on it, my number, a little over four minutes.

"She showed me this at seven this morning," Angelo said. "She said you phoned her about the baby and told her to let me wonder."

I looked at it for a long time.

The room was very quiet, and the only sound was the butter spitting in the pan.

"It's a picture again," I said. "She's good with pictures."

"I know."

"Did you believe it?"

He didn't look away.

"For about the length of one breath," Angelo said. "I'm telling you because I'm done keeping that kind of thing from you."

I nodded slowly.

That counted for something, and I let it.

Then I looked at the time again, and a cold feeling came up my back.

"Three-twelve," I said.

"Tala?"

"My phone did ring at three-twelve. I didn't call anyone. I answered."
