Chapter 25: A Grave in the Front Yard
The second lemon tree was lying on the front walk with its roots in the air.
I saw it from the doorway, holding a pot of tinola in both hands.
Angelo had made it himself at five that morning and burned the garlic.
I'd eaten a full bowl standing at the stove, because he was watching me do it.
It was the twenty-ninth of March, a year to the day since the worst afternoon of my life.
We had planned to sit under the new tree at dawn and not say anything.
The sapling lay across the flagstones with its three leaves already curling.
The hole it had stood in gaped in the wet grass.
A woman sat on our front step with a garden spade across her knees.
She wore a black dress and pearl earrings, and mud up to both elbows.
Her silver-streaked hair was pulled back so tight it lifted her eyebrows.
She looked me over once, from my slippers to my face.
"You're the one with the bakery," she said.
Across the street a man in a bathrobe stood at his gate, holding the leash of a very small dog.
