Chapter 26: Twelve Sundays
I left a note on the tea tin and took a taxi to the Grand.
It said, "Gone to see your mother. Eat something. Do not call the night manager and shout."
Angelo was still in the front yard when I went out the back way, standing over the tree with his hands hanging.
He didn't hear me go.
The night manager had a key card ready before I reached the desk.
He did not look up from it, which is how I knew every employee in the lobby had already heard.
Room 1412 had the king bed, the long window and the bay, the same as in September.
Lourdes sat at the little table by the glass with a tea tray in front of her.
She had scrubbed her arms, but there was still garden dirt under her nails, and she hadn't tried to hide it.
A green fruit lay cut in half on a saucer.
"Calamansi," she said. "From my own tree. The hotel's lemons are too big."
"Too big."
"They look impressive and taste like nothing. Sit. You came alone, which is good."
"I left a note."
"What did it say?"
"To eat something."
"A sensible note."
She poured tea into two hotel cups and squeezed the calamansi into mine without asking.
It was sour and clean, and it was the best tea I'd had in a month, and I hated that.
"This is the room," Lourdes said, looking around it. "I read so much about it. I thought it would be bigger."
"Who wrote to you about it?"
"Someone who wrote back."
I thought of Tomas and his Sunday phone calls, and I let it go.
"What do you want, Mrs. Alcantara?"
"My son at my table."
"He has a table. It's in the house you pulled the tree out of."
"I will not sit in that yard again." She set her cup down.
"Twelve Sundays, here, at six o'clock. Angelo, Tomas and you. The hotel cooks."
