Chapter 32: Tomas's Bottle
My phone rang in the middle of the night, and Dessa's voice was a whisper.
"He's on the bathroom floor of 1412. He called me. He doesn't want Angelo."
"Is he drinking?"
"There's a bottle. It's sealed. I'm on my way, and I need someone who can get me past the night desk."
I woke Angelo and told him, because that was the rule.
Earlier that night I had asked him what he'd said to Noelle the week his father died.
He had told me he didn't remember the week at all, and he'd looked sick saying it.
I had let it lie, which I was already sorry for.
He was on his feet before I finished.
"I'm coming."
"He asked for Dessa. He didn't ask for you."
His jaw worked.
"I'm angry," he said. "I'm here. I'll sit in the kitchen with my phone in my hand until you call."
"That's a terrible rule."
"It's mine."
The night manager gave us a key card without a word, and we rode up together in Dessa's scrubs and my coat.
