Chapter 38: Bed Rest
Lourdes knocked at seven on Wednesday morning, and then she waited on the step.
I heard it from the bed in the guest room off the kitchen, three knocks and a long silence.
Angelo went to open the door in his shirtsleeves.
"Good morning, anak," his mother said. "I have brought pork."
She had a paper bag in each arm and a bunch of green leaves sticking out of the top of one.
"You have a key," I called from the pillows.
"I knock," she called back.
"You live in the Grand. You've got no business in my kitchen at seven in the morning."
"I have business in your kitchen until the doctor says otherwise."
She put on an apron she had brought in her handbag.
By eight the whole house smelled of sour broth.
It was sinigang, with tamarind and radish and long beans.
She let it simmer for hours on the back burner with the lid tipped.
I lay in the guest bed with my feet on two pillows, because she had put them there.
I had slept in this bed in August with a sprained ankle and a husband I didn't trust.
Now I was in it with a heartbeat the size of a bean.
And Lourdes Alcantara walked back and forth outside my door with a ladle.
She brought me a bowl at noon and stood over me until I had finished it.
"Is it too sour?"
"It's perfect."
"My mother put too much tamarind, and I swore I would never." She took the empty bowl. "Then I did the same."
That was all she said about her mother.
She went back to the stove, and I lay there and felt strange and warm.
