Chapter 11: The Moot

Both packs filled the Moot Hall at noon, and the room smelled of wet wool and held tempers.

I sat at the front on the Ironwood side, in a clean dress that Keegan's sister had lent me, with Dorran's coat on my knees.

Hester sat at the long table at the head of the hall with her cane across her lap.

She was the oldest Elder in either pack, so the Moot was hers to hold.

A Cold Creek elder sat beside her, the gray-haired woman from the kitchen, and she would not meet my eyes.

My father stood at the far end of the aisle with Rosalie beside him.

She wore white, and her hair was pinned up, and she looked ready for her wedding.

"The petition," Hester said. "Osmund Marrow, state it."

"Elders." My father's voice was low, grave and gentle. "I come here with a heavy heart. A fraud was done against Alpha Ironwood at the Claiming, and I was part of it, God forgive me."

A rustle ran through the Cold Creek side.

"The treaty names the Marrow firstborn daughter," he said. "That is my Rosalie. She was frightened and ran. In my panic, I sent her sister in her place, and the alpha took the wrong girl."

"You told me the treaty said a daughter," Dorran said.

He had not stood, and he did not raise his voice.

"I misspoke, in the moment."

"You misspoke to my face, in front of four hundred wolves."

"I was desperate." My father spread his hands. "Which is why I ask this Moot to put it right. Annul the false claim. Release my poor Tilda to her family, because she is not well, as you have all seen. And Rosalie will take her proper place at the alpha's side, as the treaty requires."
