Chapter 19: Behind the Bar
The service door at the Tattnall house opened onto a hallway of stainless steel and shouting.
I walked through it at six, in a black vest and white shirt, with my hair pinned up and a bar kit over my shoulder.
Nobody looked at my face. Nobody ever does.
The head bartender had given me the shift without asking a single question, and I had not offered one.
"Dining room," she said. "Portable bar by the window. Seven directors and a hostess."
"I know the hostess," I said.
"Good luck, then."
The bar was a six-foot table with a white cloth, and I had it stocked in nine minutes.
Through the doorway, the long mahogany table gleamed under the chandelier.
The seven directors drifted in at seven, still in their suits from the afternoon.
The old man with the bow tie came first, and I handed him a glass of sparkling water without being asked.
