Chapter 19: What He Owed

Scott's POV

At eight the next morning I stood at the front of the largest conference room in Ellery Tower.

I told two hundred people I was leaving.

They had been told to expect a merger announcement.

Half of them still had their coffee in their hands.

"I'm stepping down as chief executive, effective today," I said.

Nobody moved.

"Three years ago I took this job on a condition I knew I couldn't meet. I hid that from the board and from my family. Most of you read about the rest in the papers."

A man in the third row looked at his shoes.

"I won't ask you to forgive that. I'll ask you to keep this company honest. My grandmother has named an interim chief, and she's the best one I know."

The interim chief was the finance director, a quiet woman who had once corrected my arithmetic in front of a client.

She nodded at me from the side of the room.

I left the podium.

No one applauded, and I was grateful.

At ten I was at St. Brendan's.

The chief of staff received me standing, and I put one sheet of paper on his desk.

"The order suspending Dr. Sherman's privileges came from the foundation," I said. "This withdraws it."

"Who signed it?"

"I did, as chairman, an hour ago. Then I resigned the chair."

He read it twice.

"Mr. Ellery, she may not come back."

"That's her decision. The hospital will be ready if she does."
