Chapter 21: Margot's POV: The Resignation

Margot's POV

My father walked into the ballroom at ten o'clock with a cane and a nurse two steps behind him.

The doctors had told him no.

He had signed himself out anyway, in the same handwriting he used on everything.

Sixty reporters sat in rows of gold chairs where, a month before, four hundred people had watched me fail my husband.

Cameras lined the back wall.

I sat in the front row, with my hands pressed flat on my knees.

Declan had not sat down.

He stood at the very back, beside the doors, because that was where I had told him to stand a month ago, and he had said it was the only place in the room he wanted to be.

I had turned around to look at him when I came in.

He had looked straight back.

It was the only thing keeping me upright.

My father took the podium with both hands.

He did not look at his notes.

"I am Alistair Southwell," he said. "As of this morning, I am no longer the chairman of Southwell Harbor Group. My resignation was accepted at eight o'clock. I have a statement, and then I will answer what I can."

A camera shutter clicked.

"Sixteen years ago my eldest daughter turned eighteen," he said. "She did not wish to work at my company. She wished to study music. I told her I would pay for nothing else. When she would not give way, I closed her accounts, I had a man follow her from her school, and I had a photographer wait outside her door."
