Chapter 7: Rule Two

"Then tell me what you do know," I said.

I kept my voice low because Archie was thirty feet away behind a thin door.

Margot stood in the hallway with the phone against her chest.

"My father thinks there is a child connected to me."

"Connected how?"

"I can't say."

"You mean you won't."

"I mean if I say it tonight, you'll pick him up and drive out of this city, and my father will find you inside a week." She breathed. "I need more time to make that not true."

"You need time."

"Yes."

"I gave you three years."

"I know what you gave me."

"Do you?" I said. "I gave you every Thursday dinner with people who called me the help. I gave you the suits and the fake smile. I let you hang a bird over my son's bed and never asked a question."

"Declan..."

"I didn't ask because you said the contract didn't need it. I signed it with my kid in a hospital gown. I'd have signed anything."

I heard how my voice sounded and lowered it again.

"Tell me what he wants with Archie."

"I can't."

"Then I'm taking him tonight. I'll take the two million if I have to. I'll put us on a bus to Ohio."

"That's exactly what my father wants you to do," Margot said.

She had come closer without my noticing.

The hallway was narrow, and her face was a foot from my chest.

"If you run, you run alone, with no one to hold the door. If you stay, I stand in front of you. I can do that. It's the one thing I'm good at."
