Chapter 10: Sixty Percent

It was nine at night in Texas and three in the morning in London.

Sir Ferdinand answered on the second ring.

He sounded exactly as he did at noon.

"Jemima. My dear."

"You own sixty percent of Lamar Ullrich's water company," I said.

There was a very short pause.

"Do I?"

"Chairman's personal vehicle. F.P. It's in your handwriting."

"Ah." I heard a chair creak. "I wondered how long you would take. I am glad you found it yourself."

I stood in the dark drive with the folder pressed against my chest.

"You told me to sell. You let me stand in a barn and say I'd fight the man who was drying my creek, and you knew."

"I wanted you to see it clearly, not be told."

"You sent me an offer from a client of the firm."

"From a vehicle of the firm, yes."

"It's a pipe, Sir Ferdinand. You put a pipe on my uncle's creek."

"Mr. Ullrich put the pipe." His voice stayed mild. "I merely lent him the capital."

"It is an excellent investment, Jemima. You said so yourself, in 2019, in the model."

I closed my eyes.

I had written that model.

I had been proud of that model.

"I'll make it simple," he went on. "Sell Hollow Oak by the first of November and the partnership is yours."

"With a seat on the investment committee. We will simply be a family of sorts, you and I."
