Chapter 19: Creek Bed
On Monday afternoon the foreman from the Water Partners drove up to the weir in a white truck with a letter in his hand.
He did not look at me.
"Mr. Ullrich isn't answering his phone," he said. "The chairman's solicitors say the order is good. The deputy's here to see it done."
He held out a key.
It was iron, as long as my hand, with a loop of orange baling twine through the bow.
Behind me stood most of Cedar Gap.
Zelma had brought lawn chairs.
Rex stood at my shoulder with his arm in its sling.
He said nothing, which was how I knew he wanted me to be the one.
I took the key.
The gate had a wheel.
I put both hands on it and pulled, and it did not move.
I put my whole weight behind it, and it gave with a shriek of rust.
For a moment there was only the iron.
Then, behind the weir, the clear pond gathered itself and leaned.
It slid over the concrete lip in a thick brown tongue, and went down into the cracked bed below us, and ran.
