Chapter 24: Scales
They came down the nave in their hundreds, and not one of them wore gloves.
Old women with lace scales across their cheekbones, boys with green patches at the throat, fathers with gold and copper plates up to the shoulder.
The small girl with the rag doll darted out from the soldiers' wives who had taken her in.
She ran up the nave to look at everything.
"We heard there was a wedding," said the elder, leaning on her stick. "We brought bread."
Four men behind her carried it in on boards, forty loaves, still warm.
Rhain went down on one knee in front of her.
She put her dry hand on his head.
"Both are in my prayers, Warden," she said. "Get up. You'll crease the king."
The High Priest married us on the Wyrm's mouth.
I asked him to keep it short.
The crowns chimed, and no gold came to either of us, and the hall made so much noise that the pigeons left the rafters.
Afterward, they brought Obern Gaunt up from the Pit.
He was thinner, in a prisoner's shirt, and he stopped when he saw the scaled folk filling the nave.
The elder looked him over.
