Chapter 20: Membership Revoked
The Shore Point board called a special meeting of the full membership for Thursday evening.
It was in the same dining room where Joyce had lost the podium.
The notice went out by email at noon.
Nobody had to forward it.
By four o'clock, every woman in Ventnor had read it twice.
Hazel found it on the Ventnor moms' page.
She read it to me over the phone while I pinned a hem in the back room of a friend's dry cleaner in Margate.
"Item one," she said. "Vote on the suspension of membership for Joyce Ann Tully, pending a hearing on conduct unbecoming."
"Conduct unbecoming."
"That's the phrase, honey. They've been saving it for twenty years."
I didn't go.
I didn't need to.
Hazel went, and she sent me a text from the parking lot before the doors opened.
"Half the room is wearing navy. Joyce is at the front table with her pearls on. Nobody's speaking to her."
