Chapter 21: Midsummer Dress

"I'll tell you on the twentieth," I said into the phone.

"Karin."

"Aunt, I promise. Come hungry."

I hung up, and Amos laughed into the hay.

That was six weeks before Midsummer, and it passed in a way I would have been ashamed to describe to anyone but him.

Janet's lawyer withdrew the Colby answer on the lease the Monday after the branding.

Brent pleaded to the assault, and went to stay with a cousin in Idaho.

The hired man took the foreman's bunk in the barn and ran the river pasture better than anyone had in years.

Amos moved his shaving kit into my father's house, and nobody in the county said a word about it.

On the Tuesday before Midsummer I stood in my parents' bedroom, in front of my mother's cedar chest, with the lid open.

I had been standing there for an hour.

My mother had been dead for fifteen years.

I'd never opened it.

At the bottom, under the tissue, lay a white linen dress with a square neck and a hem embroidered in blue.

The tag inside was in my father's handwriting, backward-leaning: *Midsummer, 1998.*

"I couldn't find you," Amos said from the door.

I held the dress against my front.

"It's hers."

"It'll fit you," he said.

"How do you know?"
