Chapter 21: The County Sale

Lulu's POV

We did not go behind the sale barn at nine.

At nine we were in the ring bleachers, in the third row, with the red ledger on my knees and Ward's shoulder against mine.

The sale barn in Big Timber smells of sawdust and coffee and horse, and on foal-sale Saturday it holds every breeder in three counties.

The auctioneer walked out onto the dirt.

"Lot fourteen," he said. "Bay colt, three months, sire the Standifer bay stallion, dam out of Waggoner stock. Papers in order."

Darrell led the colt in himself.

He wore his pressed shirt and the belt buckle and the smile.

He looked up at the bleachers, saw me, and the smile stayed exactly where it was.

"Who'll start me at ten thousand?" the auctioneer said.

Paddles went up.

A man in a good hat in the front row called twelve.

I stood up.

"Sir," I said. "Before you take that bid, I'd like to say something about that colt."

Heads turned.

The auctioneer looked at Darrell.

"Miss Standifer," Darrell said, soft and sorrowful. "Not here. We can talk privately."

"We could have, behind the barn. You asked for that."

Ward stood beside me, and his hand rested on my back.

I went down the steps to the rail and held up the ledger.

"This is the Standifer stud record," I said. "It's been kept by hand for sixteen years. It lists every mare our bay stallion has covered, with the date and the vet who checked her."

"Honey," Darrell said.

"Waggoner's mare isn't in it."

The room had gone quiet.

"His papers say my stallion sired that colt," I said. "The registry wants a stud certificate signed by the stallion's owner. The owner is half me and half Ward Maddox, and neither of us signed one."
