Poppy woke me at six on Saturday by standing on my chest in her yellow dress.
"It's the day," she said.
"It's the day," I agreed, with her heel in my ribs.
She had been rehearsing for a week.
She had a basket of paper bees she'd cut out herself.
She carried it to the front door and stood there in her good shoes until I was dressed.
I put on a cream dress that I had bought for forty dollars.
I left my hair as it was, short and dark and mine.
My hand looked strange with the ring on it.
It kept catching the light and surprising me.
We took the bus to the courthouse, because Poppy wanted to ride one.
She pressed her face to the window the whole way and named the dogs.
The housekeeper was waiting on the sidewalk with Christian's lawyer and the housekeeper's sister.
