Chapter 12: What He Didn't Say
Abram was waiting on the iron stairs when we came through the green door.
He took one look at my face, and then he looked at my wrist.
Lise said, "Four marks. He grabbed her at the table."
"I know." His voice was perfectly flat. "Thank you, Lise. Go home."
"I'd like to stay."
"Go home."
She went, but she looked back at me from the doorway, her eyes troubled.
Abram took me upstairs without touching me.
He sat me down at the long table in his apartment, got a bag of frozen peas from the freezer, and wrapped it in a towel.
He laid it over my wrist very carefully.
"Does it hurt?"
"Not much."
"Tell me what he said."
I told him.
I told him about the letter on the cream paper, and the blacked-out line, and the word revenge.
His face stayed still, but a muscle moved in his jaw.
When I got to the end, I said, "He told me to ask you why you threw him out."
"I did throw him out."
"Why?"
"I can't tell you."
I took the peas off my wrist and set them on the table.
"You can't."
"It isn't my story. It belongs to someone else, and she hasn't said I can tell it."
"Lise."
He didn't answer, which was an answer.
I sat very straight in the hard chair, with the shaking coming up through my knees.
"I read your notebook," I said.
His eyes closed for a second.
"The Monday before the show. Lise says the Marden girl. Saturday after the show. She'll come." I heard my own voice crack. "You knew my name a week before I knew yours."
