Chapter 24: Saturday
On Monday, Lise gave her statement to a detective for three hours, and I sat beside her the whole time.
By Friday the Deverill Gallery was dark, and its board had put out a letter suspending Sheldon.
The woman in the green coat mailed me a check for nine hundred dollars with a note that said: I should have bought it the first night.
None of it was what I was thinking about on Saturday.
I was thinking about Abram, sitting on the edge of the bed in the little room behind the curtain, where I'd told him to wait.
He was in his dark shirt with the sleeves pushed up, and his big hands were resting on his knees.
He looked uncertain, which I had never seen on him before the week of the gala.
"Take your shirt off," I said.
He did.
"Lie on your back. Hands flat on the pillow, either side of your head."
He lay down.
"Keep them there."
I took a black scarf out of my bag, and he watched it come toward his face.
"Joss."
"Miss Marden."
"Miss Marden," he said, and a smile pulled at his mouth. "Is that for me?"
"It's your lesson."
I tied it over his eyes.
His breath went out of him in one long sound.
"What's the lesson?" he asked.
"You don't help." I climbed onto the bed beside him and ran my fingers down the middle of his chest. "You don't lead and you don't fix it and you don't hold back so I won't be hurt. You take it. That's all."
"That sounds easy."
"You've been doing the opposite for forty-one years."
His hands tightened on the pillow, and then, with visible effort, opened again.
I undid his belt and drew his trousers down and off.
