Chapter 5: Daddy
I got in the car.
I didn't look back at Sheldon, but I felt him on the step the whole way down the block.
Abram drove with both hands on the wheel.
His knuckles were pale.
"He looked scared of you," I said.
"Did he?"
"Why?"
"Because he knows what I'd do if he touched you again." He kept his eyes on the road. "He isn't welcome at my club. That's all I'll say tonight. It isn't only my story."
"Whose is it?"
"Saturday, Joss."
He parked outside my building two hours later, after a diner and a long quiet dinner of eggs and coffee at a back booth where he kept his hands flat on the table.
I watched them the entire time.
I did not ask for anything, and he did not offer it.
When I got out, he said, "Come Saturday. Wear something you can take off yourself."
I thought about those words for five days.
On Saturday the curtain room was warmer than before.
There was a bench in the middle of it, low and padded, and next to it a wooden paddle hanging on a hook.
"You told me what you drew," Abram said. "The hand on the wrist. The hand on the back of the neck. The hand lifted." He turned from the hook. "There's one more you drew a lot and never finished."
My throat went dry.
"The hand coming down," I said.
"Take off your dress, Joss."
I took it off, and my underwear, and I stood bare in the lamplight with my chin up.
His eyes went over me and stayed.
"Good girl," he said. "Come here."
He sat on the edge of the bench and pulled me across his lap.
