Chapter 13: Dawn
Rafa took Dom by the throat and put him against the bedpost.
The whole bed shook with it.
Dom did not lift a hand.
He stood naked in the lamplight with his head back and let himself be held, and his eyes were on me.
"Nine nights," Rafa said. His voice was low and wrecked. "Nine nights I lay in her bed with your word in my mouth."
"Rafa," Dom said, around the grip on his neck.
"You said the old man swore us. You said it on your honor, Dom. You said it at five in the morning."
"I did," Dom said.
"I looked at the floor for nine years because of that."
Quino got off the bed.
He did not shout and he did not hurry.
He stepped between them and put his left hand flat on Rafa's chest.
"Enough," he said quietly. "Let go of him."
"Move, Quino."
"Not this way. Not in front of her."
Rafa's hand stayed where it was.
His whole arm shook.
Then he let go, and Dom slid a few inches down the bedpost and caught himself.
I sat in the middle of my father's bed with the sheet in my fist, and the lamps still burned.
I was not angry yet.
I was cold and very clear.
"Dom," I said. "Get dressed."
He bent for his trousers with his hands still trembling.
He dressed slowly, and nobody helped him, and nobody spoke.
"You will leave my house," I said. "You will not come back for eleven days."
He looked up.
"Eleven, Valentina?"
"One for every year you spent alone, so you know what it weighs."
