Chapter 18: Entry Night
The Taebaek gymnasium held two thousand people on a Saturday night, and by seven o'clock it held more.
Seok-hyun stood at a folding table in the middle of the basketball court in his father's funeral suit, which was too short in the sleeve.
Behind him the town filled the bleachers in coats and boots.
The old miners had been given the front row with their bottles at their feet.
Along the court's far side, on the painted free-throw line, stood fourteen tables with a gold or silver crest on each cloth.
The Han River Guild Federation had come to Taebaek in force.
Each table held a master or a deputy, a lawyer and a stack of folders.
The seat at the center of the row belonged to Daewon.
The master of Daewon sat with his hands folded on the cloth and his gray coat over his knees.
He had not looked at Seok-hyun once since the doors opened.
On Wednesday, at six in the morning, Seok-hyun had gone down to the glass room with the Toll still unspoken.
His mother had listened to the plan with her eyes shut.
"Sell the door," she had said. "Don't sell me."
He had turned that sentence over every night since, because it was a sentence a person could not say without having thought about the difference.
Now he read the rule aloud to the hall, from a sheet in his father's square hand that he had copied on Thursday.
"Toll," he said. "A tag from my hand is sold in open hall to the highest bid, for thirty days. Pay at the giving."
"Any climber rated D or below pays nothing, and takes a tag at the door."
His voice carried to the roof of the gym, and the Ledger lay in his eye with the line settled and waiting.
