Chapter 19: In Writing
By Friday morning the post had forty thousand shares and my name in every comment.
I read none of them after the first hundred.
Someone had found my dental office and left a one-star review.
A woman had written that she would never let a baby-killer near her gums.
The office manager was at the front desk with her phone face down, and she did not meet my eyes.
"The dentist wants to see you," she said.
I went down the short hall with my hand flat on my stomach.
The dentist was in his small office behind the supply closet, a gray-haired man who had hired me at twenty-three and never once raised his voice.
He had two printouts on his desk.
"Sit," he said. "Please."
I sat.
"I've had a dozen calls this morning," he said. "Four asked me to fire you. Two asked for you by name."
"I'm sorry."
"I'm not asking you to be." He pushed one printout toward me. "This is Nicolette's post. This is a note from a patient. She says you were gentle with her when she had a panic attack in the chair."
I looked at the second page.
"It's the second note I've had," he said. "Patients write, you know. They are never so loud as the other kind."
"What do I do?"
"Nothing." He folded his hands. "You work. You go home. If anyone comes to the door and wants a scene, I will handle it myself, and I'll enjoy it."
I put my face in my hands for exactly one breath.
Then I took them away and went to clean the teeth of a man who had no idea who I was.
